Whether you live in a warmer climate or it's summertime, you will need to keep your groceries cold until you get home from grocery shopping. When temperatures get close to 100 degrees, this isn't always easy to do. Items like ice cream will quickly melt, even if you rush home as quickly as possible. But, there are things you can do to help prevent your foods from ruining. You can keep your foods cold, when grocery shopping, by following these tips.

How to Keep Foods Cold When Grocery Shopping #1: Save Cold Items Until the Last Store

In order to save money, many people will go to more than one store when doing their grocery shopping. If you want to keep your food cold though, you need to put off buying refrigerated and frozen items until you get to the last store. This means you may need to spend more money on some items and you may even need to change which stores you visit first and last.

How to Keep Foods Cold When Grocery Shopping #2: Make More Than One Trip

If you do have to purchase cold items at several different stores, you may need to make more than one trip. If you live close to the grocery store, this shouldn't be a big deal. You can quickly run home in between each store. If you don't live close to the grocery store, you may want to split your grocery shopping up into more than one day. This way, food will stay cold when you're grocery shopping. This tip will help to some degree, but if you want to keep your foods cold, when grocery shopping, you must follow the rest of these tips.

How to Keep Foods Cold When Grocery Shopping #3: Purchase Cold Items Last

No matter how you will be doing your grocery shopping, you will need to purchase your cold items last. When you walk around the store for an hour, with ice cream in your cart, it will already have begun to melt. While some stores put their freezer sections in the middle of the store, it is best to buy all your other items and then buy your frozen foods. This will help to ensure that your foods stay cold for a longer amount of time.

How to Keep Foods Cold When Grocery Shopping #4: Have Cold Items Bagged in Paper Bags

When you are done grocery shopping, you should ask for your cold items to be bagged in paper bags. This will help to ensure that your foods stay cold longer. The paper bag will help to trap the cold air in the bag (packing several items together will help even more). But, a paper bag will only keep items cold for so long.

Richard L. Meister Jr.: Good article, Amy. I've done some form of all of these for several years except going to more than one store. I try to get everything I need at one store. I had a friend who used to say, "Don't be penny smart and dollar foolish." In other words, make sure you aren't spending more money for gas and wear and tear on your car than you are saving by going to several different grocery stores for the bargains.
